Seven years. SEVEN YEARS. That is how long Australian journalist Peter Greste and two others will be held in an Egyptian gaol – why?
For doing their job. Without a single thread of evidence against the well-respected Al Jazerra journalists, Egypt has gaoled the trio for seven years for; their argument – supporting the Egyptian Brotherhood – a group that was recently declared a terrorist organisation by the Egyptian Government. However, they were NOT supporting it – they were REPORTING it. Their jobs. Truthfully, accurately reporting it. Just in the wrong place in the wrong time.
Yet, just last week, the United States gave five hundred and seventy million dollars to Egypt. That’s $570,000,000.00. For military aid.
How can society expect to function without a basic level of democracy and fairness when a nation is allowed to lock up journalists for reporting the truth – not only that, but without one concrete piece of evidence?
Society cannot function properly without freedom of the press and the media. It needs truth and accuracy – how we can just accept this is beyond me.
